Strategic Research Cluster: Restricting Access to Lethal Means

Several NSRF studies have addressed objectives relating to reducing or restricting access to lethal means (NSHRI, EAAD, SSHO), with significant impact, such as the withdrawal of distalgesic, the establishment of a Task Force on reducing access to benzodiazepines, increasing safety at locations where people frequently engage in suicide involving drowning or attempted drowning .  In 2021, an initiative began, which aims to address the increasing rate of paracetamol related intentional drug overdoses, supported by the National Self-Harm Registry Ireland data.

The longstanding expertise in this area and consistency of effectiveness of these measures in reducing suicide and self-harm, supports the establishment of this research cluster.
