On Wednesday November 11th, 2026, the National Suicide Research Foundation, in collaboration with the HSE National Office for Suicide Prevention, will host the Sixth Early and Mid-Career Suicide and Self-Harm Researcher Workshop.
The online Workshop will feature a Keynote Lecture by Prof. Thomas Niederkrotenthaler, alongside a series of presentations from early and mid-career researchers exploring topics related to suicide and self-harm.
One of the key Workshop aims is to support early and mid-career researchers, and provide an opportunity for idea exchange, constructive feedback and collaboration.

Present your research
We would like to invite Early and Mid-Career Researchers based on the island of Ireland to submit an abstract for presentation.
We welcome submissions on mental health-related topics, where there are clear applications to, or learnings for, suicide or self-harm prevention.
- Be in contention for a research bursary award to advance your knowledge in self-harm and suicide prevention research.
- Discuss your research findings, or your research in progress, with members of the research community.
- An opportunity to enhance the design of your study and methodology, or to further disseminate and strengthen the impact of your research findings.
Your research does not have to be completed. We particularly welcome research in progress, recognising that one of the key Workshop aims is to support early and mid-career researchers, and provide an opportunity for you to exchange ideas and obtain constructive feedback from colleagues.
All submitted abstracts will be reviewed and scored by a panel of judges. Those receiving the highest scores will be invited to present at the Workshop. To ensure fairness, additional weighting may be applied so that individual research projects receive a higher score relative to large, team-based projects.
A prize of €1000 will be awarded to best presentation on the day.
Format of research presentations: Presenters will be allocated 20 minutes to share their research and 20 minutes for discussion.
Eligibility: Early-career researchers are typically Masters students, PhD students or those within 5 years of research-related employment, following completion of postgraduate research training. Mid-career researchers are typically within 5-15 years of research-related employment, following completion of postgraduate research training. All researchers must be based on the island of Ireland.
Selection: All abstracts submitted for the Early and Mid-Career Researcher Workshop will be reviewed by a panel of judges, comprising both internal and external representatives of the NSRF.
The reviewers’ decision regarding abstracts is final.
